Design project mile was formed by Bandai Matsuo (acoustic engineer), Kentaro Kai (software engineer) and Kozo Shimoyama (interior designer) while they were still students at the University of Tsukuba. After they graduated from 2000 to 2003, they continued the project while becoming fully active in their own respective fields. They changed the name to MILE in 2008 and started working in full scale as a team. As “three heads are better than one” (the Chinese character for MILE can be read as san which also means three), they are expanding their design activities making use of each member’s specialty. Incorporating humor-filled storytelling, they create designs that pleasantly link people, things and space.
Among the awards they’ve received is the Good Design Award (2006) for Something to Touch, which is a set of Wajima lacquer speakers.

He is troubled every day.
He is full of antinomies, and they conflict with each other.
But their conflict makes himself as a brand-new person.
That’s why his life is beautiful every day.

It was an unexpected scenery.
Went through a tunnel and saw a vertical rainbow.
The way up to the sky from the running surface of the lake.
Ah, it was the moment you stopped crying…

“13 minutes to two”…
The mysterious voice of full moon reached a Werewolf,
walking in a dark old town. “I could meet her at 2 am….”
A pretty girl with pale skin and tiny fangs.
She found me and ran in my direction.
I said to her with waving my hand,
“Good aftermoooooon!”

This is a cable that lets the user connect his or her portable audio player to a television. The living room can be permeated with music very easily, without the use of any special audio devices. When the device is used, images also appear on the TV screen, and move in sync with the sounds that are emitted from the speakers. The television takes on a new role as a hub that ties together people, music, and the surroundings. That familiar old box becomes a marvelous device that makes us feel like we are closer to the music.

Ornamental decoration on Urushi has developed in Wajima from the Edo period. In our culture Chopsticks and chopstick rests are meant for daily use. These chopstick rests combine traditional Japanese techniques such as Makie, Chinkin, Urushie with Yuzen graphic patterns. “a piece of japan” is not to be seen just as an original chopstick rest, but also a beautiful piece of Art.

Wajima-nuri uses many different and complex processes by several craftsmen. Normally you would not be able to visually see these processes in the finished product. “Layer for hands” chopsticks are deliberately designed to show this complex process.

“one hand bowl” is narrower than a standard bowl but deeper than a normal tea cup. The design enables full enjoyment of your drink. We feel happy when we have a bowl of hot soup… Soup bowls have been very popular in Wajima-nuri where this tableware is in daily use. With this design, the bowl form has been updated for our modern life.

In Japan, Wajima-nuri traditionally has been used for very formal celebration, such as weddings. On the other hand, this product is designed to create a special moment with your special person in your daily life. “Shuki” is a shallow Sake cup that you need to keep pouring, to promote a romantic communication. The Sake cup has a small cut section on the rim, so that the cups “kiss” when you toast.

In Japan, there was an old custom of enjoying the moon light reflected to the surface of the water put on tub. The outline of the moon changes by synchronized with the wind. “Day and Night” is the lighting which has both the swinging and tension. Swing crosses the time, and tension exists in the space.

We hold exhibition of “MILE – for everyting come in time to those who can wait at home -”. It suggested modern Japanese lifestyle on floor. We created living space by how we feel than how we need. In this exhibition, we asked visitors to take their shoes off to make themself at home.

October 1999, Sony building, Tokyo, Japan
For TV program which introduces movie, music, and art made in Tokyo. It utilized “Unit Wall System (first announced in design festa in 1999),” to take on, compose and decompose the set quickly. We created pop and comfortable space to fit to the image of the program.
1999, “Design Festa” in Tokyo, Japan
We suggested room style for city people who move in short interval. This exhibition entitled “Tokyo Nomad.” In the festa, we exhibited movable room,”Unit Wall System.” It took a style we moved to Tokyo Big Site, where the festa was hold.

This system came from the idea “moving with walls”. These walls have the functions of CD player, speaker, lighting, monitor and strage. It is easy to compose and decompose those combination of walls by any shape of a room.
